Baptism is not just plain water, but it is the water included in God’s command and combined with God’s word.  Baptism is a sacrament where the ordinary becomes sacred with the blessing of God and the community.

Christ our Lord says: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”   Matt. 28:19

Baptism provides for the forgiveness of sins, rescue from death and the devil, and eternal salvation to all who believe.

What does water symbolize in Baptism?

The water of Baptism represents the Word of God and the promise of salvation.  The water of Baptism represents life-giving water rich in grace.  St. Paul says:  “He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying.”               Titus 3:5–8

Baptism is a significant part of our faith journey as we come from the baptismal waters to live a new life as children of God. Marked with the cross of Christ and sealed by the Spirit, we receive a new identity as followers of Jesus, and the story of Jesus becomes our story.
