The Situation: Multiple wildfires have broken out across Los Angeles County in California, with tens of thousands of people under evacuation orders. Sparked by dry conditions, strong winds and a limited water supply, these fires have destroyed homes and businesses and have led to injuries and loss of life.

Our Response: Lutheran Disaster Response is coordinating with the Southwest California Synod, Pacifica Synod and other partners to assess the needs of people impacted by the wildfires. We will work with them to provide for immediate needs and recovery amid the widespread destruction.

What you can do:

Pray:
Please pray for communities in California impacted by the wildfires. May God's healing presence bring them peace and hope in their time of need and give strength to those working diligently to contain the fires and care for affected communities.

Give:
Your gifts to Lutheran Disaster Response equip us to respond to communities affected by wildfires and related disasters. These gifts also empower us to respond to disasters whenever and wherever they strike. Gifts to "U.S. Wildfires" will be used in full (100%) to assist those affected by wildfires until the response is complete.

To give by phone, call  800-638-3522. Checks or money orders can be mailed to:

Lutheran Disaster Response, P.O. Box 1809, Merrifield, VA 22116-8009;

You may also write a check to Emmanuel Lutheran Church and write “California wildfires” in the memo.

QUILT SUNDAY IS FEBRUARY 2: Each year we are blessed to have our worship areas decorated with quilts made by our members. Every week from October - April, a group of women get together and transform the Family Life Center into a sewing room. They meet each Monday from 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM.

Some Interesting Facts:

  • Our quilters make over 100 quilts each year.

  • Each year they give quilts to St. Matthew’s House, High School Seniors and baptisms.

  • Our quilters will send about 100 quilts to Lutheran World Relief (LWR) this year. From Oct. ‘22 - September ‘23 LWR distributed quilts to 8 countries. Since the fall of ‘24, LWR also ships to areas in the U.S. that have experience natural disasters. It costs Emmanuel Lutheran Church $2.80 to ship each quilt, therefore it will cost us $280 to ship our quilts to LWR this year.

  • Each quilt costs about $10 to produce with batting and crochet thread the major expenses. (Not including all the time and effort and love the quilters pour into these quilts.) The quilters rely on cotton fabric and thread donations.  Sometimes we need to purchase material and thread and the cost.

JOIN EMMANUEL’S BOOK CLUB: Our next meeting is Monday, February 10 at 2 PM in Classroom 2. You can enter directly into this room through the door on the north side of the church building. (It’s best to park in the back parking lot.) We will be discussing the book, James, by Percival Everett.

UPCOMING BOOKS:

March 10, 2025: Art Thief by Michael Finkel

April 14, 2025: Sensible Shoes by Sharon Garlough Brown
