THIS WEEK’S SUNDAY FORUM. WAR: What is is Good For?

Christians have traditionally approached the question of war in three primary ways:

  1. Pacifism – Followers of Christ should not participate in violence or war. “Blessed are the peacemakers.”

  2. Just War Theory – War may be considered legitimate as a last resort or necessary evil. Even in war, Christians seek to protect civilians and avoid unnecessary suffering.

  3. Holy War – The belief that God calls people to conquer land or advance a divine purpose. War may be viewed as a sacred duty in defense or expansion of the faith.

How should we evaluate the wars we encounter today? Do these Christian ideas still hold validity? Do these approaches help frame our understanding of what it means to follow Jesus as his disciples? How do different Christian denominations approach the question of war?

Watch the video to learn more, then join us on Sunday at 10:15 AM for a thoughtful discussion as we discern together: War — what is it good for? Especially as disciples of Jesus.

LECTIONARY PLUS: Prepare for Worship This Sunday.

This Week’s Readings: Ephesians 5:8-14 • Samuel 16:1-13 • John 9:1-41

This week’s Gospel from John tells the powerful story of Jesus healing the man born blind. The miracle itself is remarkable, but the story also focuses on what happens afterward—how the man’s family, neighbors, and the religious leaders respond. Many struggle with the miracle, and some even distance themselves from it. In the midst of this story, Jesus reminds us that he is the Light of the World, opening not only physical eyes but also giving spiritual sight. The question becomes: Who is truly blind?

In Ephesians, we are called to live as children of the light, reflecting the fruit that comes from walking in God’s truth, goodness, and righteousness.

In 1 Samuel, we see David being anointed by Samuel, reminding us that God often calls and equips people for purposes that others may not immediately recognize.

This Sunday, Pastor Lillejord will reflect on the story from John and the mystery of miracles and faith. Miracles do not always make sense—and neither does faith. Yet they continue to happen all around us, whether we fully understand them or not.

Take time this week to read the texts, reflect, and pray. Then join us on Sunday as Pastor Lillejord shares more about seeing the miracles in our midst.
